R2 Crown (sterling-silver) – R995
2 1/2c Tickey (sterling-silver) – R350
To commemorate this proudly South African milestone, the 2017 Crown and Tickey series under the theme South African Inventions (launched in 2016) celebrates the medical phenomenon that is the heart transplant.
The reverse of the R2 crown depicts a human torso indicating the position of the heart, the denomination, the words ‘First heart transplant’, and the year ‘1967’. The obverse features the coat of arms of South Africa, the year ‘2017’, and the words ‘South Africa’ in all the official languages.
The reverse of the 2½c tickey shows a human heart, the denomination, and ‘CNB’ for Dr Barnard, while the obverse features the words ‘South Africa’, the year ‘2017’, and a King Protea.
The two coins are ingeniously designed to emulate a heart transplant: the Crown (the ‘chest’) forms the cavity in which the tickey (‘heart’) can be placed to conduct a coin transplant.
The Golden Jubilee is the definitive book on the world’s most traded bullion coin, published by the South African Mint and Rand Refinery. Krugerrand Golden Jubilee is the result of years of meticulous research by Professor Francois Malan, a globally recognised expert on the Krugerrand and other coins.
With a Foreword by Lesetja Kganyago, Governor of the South African Reserve Bank, the book also features a superb array of visual images that have never before been collected together. Krugerrand Golden Jubilee is a beautifully designed book that will form an important part of any collector or investor’s library, providing a worthy companion to a coin beloved by so many over the past five decades.
Professor Malan, also the author of History of the Nickel Coins of South Africa, is an active committee member of the National Numismatic Society of South Africa. Currently a Senior Rock Engineering Consultant at Sibanye Gold, Professor Malan earned his Ph.D. in Mining Engineering from Wits in 1998 and is an Extraordinary Professor at the University of Pretoria and an Honorary Associate Professor at Wits.
The Krugerrand Millions, written by Prof Francois Malan was also released to mark the milestone achievement of 50 years. This gives a definite narrative on how the Krugerrand became the world’s favourite gold bullion coin, and follows a neat chronological order of events while offering insights into the coin’s early life, tumultuous growth years through apartheid and sanctions to the legend it has now become.
