In 2016, the South African Mint launched the theme South African Inventions to highlight globally relevant inventions and firsts by South Africans. The first invention to be featured was the dolosse. Developed in East London in 1963 to protect harbour walls and dissipate the energy of breaking waves, the dolosse are found in their millions along coastlines worldwide.
The reverse of the R2 crown depicts people on a harbour wall protected by a number of dolosse. Its obverse features the coat of arms of South Africa, the year ‘2016’ and the words ‘South Africa’ in all the official languages.
The reverse of the 2-½ cent tickey shows a single dolos with the denomination ‘2-½ c’ while the obverse features the words ‘South Africa’ with the year ‘2016’ and a Protea.
The year 2017 marks the 50th anniversary of the first successful human-to-human heart transplant, performed by a team of around 30 surgeons – led by Dr Christiaan Neethling Barnard – in the Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town on 3 December 1967.
Although the recipient survived for only 18 days after the operation before he died from double pneumonia, the transplant was a significant breakthrough for medical science. After this event, ongoing research in the field laid the foundation for heart transplants to become a well-established form of therapy for end-stage cardiac disease.
The reverse of the R2 crown depicts a human torso indicating the position of the heart, the denomination, the words ‘First heart transplant’, and the year ‘1967’. The obverse features the coat of arms of South Africa, the year ‘2017’, and the words ‘South Africa’ in all the official languages.
The reverse of the 2½c tickey shows a human heart, the denomination, and ‘CNB’ for Dr Barnard, while the obverse features the words ‘South Africa’, the year ‘2017’, and a King Protea.

The South African Mint honours The life of a legend: Nelson Mandela on its Protea coin series. Introduced in 2013, a different chapter of Mr Mandela’s life is portrayed annually. In 2016, the series focused on Nelson Mandela as a young attorney and on the concept of justice.
The 2016 sterling-silver R1 Protea coin depicts an African Lady Justice holding a balanced scale together with the seven fundamental values of the Constitution of South Africa and the denomination ‘R1’.
On the obverse, Nelson Mandela is featured wearing a trademark Madiba shirt, surrounded by South Africa’s national flower, the King Protea, as well as the words ‘South Africa’ and ‘2016’.
Look out for the 2017 theme, which focuses on the Freedom Charter, the arrest of Nelson Mandela and the uMkhonto we Sizwe leaders, as well as the Rivonia Trial.
The South African Mint also introduces a new series titled South African Celebrations in 2017. The theme begins with the celebration of the centenary of Oliver Reginald Tambo.

In celebration of the rich diversity of the Kogelberg Biosphere, we launched a new colour coin range to showcase its staggering beauty for the first time in 2016. The range contains four coins; two R5 sterling-silver 1 oz coins depicting the flora and two R10 sterling-silver 1 oz coins depicting the bird life of the UNESCO Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve.
Look out for the new 2017 range which will feature the beautiful flora and fauna of the UNESCO Cape West Coast Biosphere Reserve.
Our fauna-related themes also include the Natura coin series, which has since 2014, featured ‘nocturnal hunters’ from the leopard, the black-backed jackal and in 2016, the spotted hyena (Crocuta crocuta).
One of the highlights among the many new products we are introducing in 2017 is the design of the 2017 Natura range, which celebrates South Africa’s fauna and numismatic history. This year, we pay homage to the beautiful illustrations by South African sculptor Coert Steynberg.
History of the Krugerrand
The iconic Krugerrand is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2017.
The legal tender 22-carat gold Krugerrand was the brainchild of the South African Chamber of Mines. When the gold standard was under pressure in the 1960s and a steady process of deregulations took place in the gold market, the Chamber of Mines saw and developed an opportunity for the ‘man on the street’ to own gold.
The Krugerrand is regarded as the beginning of modern gold coin collecting.
The striking of the first gold Krugerrand on 3 July 1967 at the South African Mint by Dr Nico Diedericks, the President of South Africa at the time, took place with little ceremony. The Krugerrand contained exactly one troy ounce of fine-gold and was a world first in that there was no denomination on the coin so that its value would be linked to the daily gold price.
The Krugerrand dominated the world’s coin market over the next nine years but in the mid-1980s, during the years when sanctions against the South African government were applied, other mints elsewhere took the opportunity to issue their own bullion coins. However, the Krugerrand had become one of the world’s leading brand names and remains so today.
The Krugerrand is available in both bullion and proof quality. The South African Mint proudly sells the proof Krugerrands which are encapsulated and issued with a numbered certificate of authenticity.
The name ‘Krugerrand’ was derived by combining Paul ‘Kruger’, President of the original Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek, with ‘rand’, the monetary unit of South Africa. The rand is also linked to the Witwatersrand, a name meaning ‘the ridge of white water’, an important gold-producing area in South Africa.
The obverse design features President Paul Kruger, modelled by die-engraver Otto Schultz and struck from the original die used in 1892 for the historic Kruger half-crown coin. The reverse, featuring the South African national animal, the springbok, was designed and engraved by sculptor Coert Steynberg and first used on the 1947 5-shilling coin.
