THE NEW MPA

The 2017 Marine Protected Areas collection celebrates the beauty and diversity of South Africa’s Prince Edward Islands MPA.

The common obverse depicts the national coat of arms, the year of issue ‘2017’ and ‘South Africa’.

50c (2oz, sterling-silver)

50c – The reverse of the 50c features the King penguin (Aptenodytes patagonicus), one of the four penguin species which breed on the islands.

20c (2oz, sterling-silver)

20c – The 20c shows two killer whales leaping from the sea. These killer whales feed on elephant seals, fur seals and penguins.

10c (2oz, sterling-silver)

10c – Prince Edward Island supports about 40 per cent of the world’s wandering albatross (Diomedea exulans) population. An adult albatross landing in the ocean is shown on the 10c.

5c (2oz, sterling-silver)

5c – The southern elephant seal (Mirounga leonina) featured on the reverse of the 5c spends most of its life out at sea.

INTRODUCING THE 2017 R1 COIN

R1 (1/10 oz, 24ct gold) – Reverse

The 2017 R1 (1/10 oz) pure gold coin features the most common and widespread snake on the African continent, the puff adder, under the theme ‘South African Reptiles’.

The reverse of this coin features the puff adder sniffing the air with its tongue.

The common obverse depicts the national coat of arms, the year of mintage ‘2017’, the denomination of ‘R1’and the metal value of ‘1/10 oz Au 999.9’.
