SA25 COLLECTABLE COINS
Continuing the long-standing tradition of crafting
coins that South Africans can treasure, the Mint’s
collectable SA25 coin series serves as a tangible
reminder to all South Africans of our hard-fought
freedom and constitutional legacy. Three collectable
coins were issued in base metal, sterling silver and
pure gold.
‘We the People’
The R50 ‘We the People’ collectable coin shows
two hands with fingers intertwined, which artist
Peter Mammes used to depict togetherness and
diversity simultaneously. Promoting democracy and
unity, the intertwined hands, which read as unity in
South African sign language, do not show race, age
or religion, but rather togetherness and the ubuntu
that South Africans strive to achieve.

‘25 Years of Constitutional Democracy’
The iconic imagery of millions of South Africans queueing at ballot
stations at the first democratic elections in 1994 forms the focus of the
R50 ‘25 Years of Constitutional Democracy’ collectable coin. Designed
by artist Lady Skollie, this coin represents the great strides made by our
nation in the 25 years of being a constitutional democracy. In particular,
it highlights the importance of the Constitution, which makes all South
Africans equal before the law, with the right to vote and choose how
they wish their country to be governed.
