‘Freedom of Religion, Belief and
Opinion’ by Peter Mammes
In a multicultural country,
where many religions, beliefs
and opinions are prevalent,
artist Peter Mammes’ challenge
was to showcase the right of
freedom of religion, belief and
opinion without referring to
a specific religion or belief.
He achieved this by using the
symbol for religion in sign
TWO RAND COIN
language – a hand raised with
an open palm – to incorporate

‘Let us Live and Strive for
Freedom’ by Lady Skollie
Images of long queues of
people waiting to cast their
vote at polling stations in the
first democratic elections in
1994 have become iconic in the
minds of South Africans. Taking
this and thematically applying
it to the only R5 circulation coin
in this series, artist Lady Skollie
beautifully showcases the desire
of all South Africans to live and FIVE RAND COIN
strive for freedom.
