THE LIFE OF A LEGEND

In the past financial year, the Mint paid tribute to
Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s first democratically
elected president and global icon, with a
collectable coin series themed ‘Life of a Legend –
Nelson Mandela’.
First introduced in 2013, each coin issued within
this theme was designed to represent a different
chapter of Madiba’s life. Over the years, the Mint
has chronicled his childhood, education, arrival
in Johannesburg, fight for justice, struggle
against apartheid, 27-year incarceration,
and release from Robben Island.
As South Africa marked 25 years of
being a constitutional democracy in
2019, the Mint is proud to present
these last coins in the ‘Life of a
Legend’ range, which represent
Nelson Mandela’s election as
South Africa’s president in 1994.
The R25 1 oz gold coin
represents the year 1994. At the
heart of the coin is a silhouetted
profile of Tata Madiba, which
contains his portrait with the
Union Buildings in the background.
Along the outer edge of the coin
is the quotation ‘Ours is a vision of
