coin features an elderly
Nelson Mandela with
the quotation ‘It is in
your hands to create a
better world for all who
live in it’.
Both the R1 sterling-silver
proof coin and the R1
sterling-silver uncirculated
coin depict a smiling Madiba
holding his grandchild. The
design is reminiscent of the
shirts he loved to wear. The
quotation ‘The spirit of Ubuntu – that
profound African sense that we are
human only through the humanity of
other human beings’ is featured on the
reverse of the coins.
The obverse of both the gold and
the silver coins depicts Mr Mandela
surrounded by a wreath of king proteas,
another symbol of South African
heritage.
